Gout Demographics

by tarpogis on January 2, 2012

Dear Colleagues,

I have been assigned a very interesting project to use our GIS system to map out the demographics of US citizens who have the disease called gout.  This project will last several months, and so I will be coming back often to update you on this interesting project.

The first round of demographics includes sending out a survey to gout sufferers to ask several questions, such as these examples:

  1. Do you know what a purine is?
  2. Do you know which foods contain high levels of purines?
  3. Are you on a low purine diet?

For any of our GIS readers who are unfamiliar with gout, purines are naturally occurring chemicals in certain foods that lead to a flair up of gout attacks, because of their break down into uric acid.

Stay tuned for more updates on this project!
